Kolkata, also known as Calcutta, is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. Located on the east bank of the Hooghly River, Kolkata has a rich history and cultural heritage. It was once the capital of British India and grew rapidly in the 19th century to become the second most important city of the British Empire after London. The city is known for its colonial architecture, art galleries, cultural festivals, and street food. Kolkata has produced many notable poets, writers, philosophers, religious teachers, scientists, and artists. It is also known for its festivals such as Durga Puja, Diwali, Holi, Eid al-Fitr, and Christmas. In this article, we will explore the history, importance, achievements, popular events, famous people and historic events of Kolkata.

Kolkata is also known for its revolutionary history, ranging from the Indian to the leftist Naxalite and trade-union movements . Labelled the “Cultural Capital of India”, “The City of Processions”, “The City of Palaces”, and the “City of Joy”, Kolkata has also been home to prominent statesman and yogis .

Kolkata has been regarded as the cultural capital of India . The city has produced many notable poets, writers, philosophers, religious teachers, scientists, and artists. Some famous people from Kolkata include Rabindranath Tagore, who was the first non-European to win a Nobel Prize , Satyajit Ray, who won an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement in 1992 and is considered among the greatest directors of film history , Mother Teresa, who is without a doubt the most famous religious figure of Kolkata , Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, a Bengali polymath, physicist, biologist, biophysicist, botanist and archaeologist , and many more.

Kolkata is also known for its festivals. Durga Puja is the largest festival of West Bengal and features colorful pandals, decorative idols of Hindu goddess Durga and her family, lighting decorations and fireworks . It has become Kolkata’s biggest public spectacle, glamorous art event and consumerist carnival . The city is decked up with lighting decorations. Loudspeakers play popular songs as well as recitation of mantras by priests. Shops, restaurants and eateries stay open all night. Fairs are set up in numerous parks and public spaces .

In addition to Durga Puja, Kolkata also celebrates other festivals such as Diwali, Holi, Eid al-Fitr, Christmas and many more with great enthusiasm. The city is known for its street food and sweets such as rasgulla, sandesh and mishti doi. Kolkata is also home to many historic landmarks such as Victoria Memorial, Howrah Bridge, St. Paul’s Cathedral and Indian Museum.
